The Beagle's ancestry can be traced back to ancient Greece, where dogs resembling modern-day Beagles were used for hunting. However, the modern Beagle breed as we know it today developed in England. During the 18th century, various types of hounds were bred together to create the Beagle, primarily for hunting hare and rabbits on foot. These early Beagles were smaller than today's breed, sometimes even small enough to be carried in saddlebags.
